Ok I know if you're looking at this extremely long post you might be thinking this method is really slow, but I'm just trying to be as detailed as possible, and if you have any experience with editing midi files you can skip most of this.  Also, once you've even made one set of tabs this way, the next time will take only minutes.

There's a neat little program called Tablature Karaoke, which can load a midi file and instantly convert it into many kinds of tabs, including guitar, banjo, harmonica, tin whistle, and others, including the 4 hole, 6 hole, and songbird pendant ocarinas.

I just finally got a Mountain oc and wanted to play right away to build up my confidence a little, and keep from getting bored, so I thought it would be nice to have an easy way to tab songs while what notes go with the fingerings.

After messing around with Tablature Karaoke for a bit, I figured out how to make new instrument files for a 12-hole Alto C, Double Alto C, and the C and G Mountain ocarinas. A very big thank you again to Moonsyne for providing the tab images :)

The problem with Tab Karaoke is that you can't single out the main melody track of a midi, so before using it directly, you need to isolate the main track, and transpose it if needed.  You can do this in Finale Notepad, or any other midi editing program, and save it as a new midi.

The instrument files are attached at the bottom of this post.  Just unzip them, and drag the files into the "instrument" folder of the Tablature Karaoke directory (wherever you installed it)

You'll need to register(free) to get the download link and serial number, and then you can install..Its about 38 Megs
The 2009 version costs $10, so make sure to get the 2008 one which is free

So, now that you have that all out of the way, you can go ahead and start downloading midi files for the songs you want!  just Google "insertsongnamehere midi" and you'll most likely get what you're after.

Step 1: Getting the File Ready
Since I couldn't find any Finale Notepad tutorials on the forum, I'm going to talk about how to use it for this purpose only, but it can also be used for making backtracks, printable sheets, and other stuff.

Once you have your midi, open Finale and go to open - make sure "files of type" is set to midi (mid) and locate your file.  It will load, and now you can see the sheet music of the whole file.  Now the quick way to do this is to first click play.  If you are familiar with sheet music, you'll probably notice which instrument staff is the main melody.  If not, you can use trial and error :).  First, use the selection tool (looks like the mouse arrow cursor) and click on the name of an instrument (red text), hit delete on your keyboard, and click play..keep doing this/undoing this until you have deleted everything but your main melody. 

Step 2: Tab Karaoke
When you open Tab Karaoke, you'll see 2 windows - the bottom is blank for now, which will be your tab window, the top is all of the options.  Where it says "instrument", click change, and select the appropriate text file that goes with your ocarina.  Next, click Load MIDI.  Obviously, find your midi, and click Open.  Now, click "even spacing", and instantly, almost by magic, there are your tabs!

Step 3: Transposing
If you're looking at the tab window and seeing lots of ?? boxes, you need to raise or lower the pitch of the midi to fit the range of your ocarina.  To do this, all you need to do is look where it says "not transposed" and click the up or down arrows until the question marks disappear.  Each click is a half step, and you can do that either in Tab Karaoke, or you can re-open Finale and change the key in there, and can also re-compose sections that just will not fit the range. (just Google Finale Notepad tutorials for this, it's easy, but this post is long enough already :))

Step 4: Saving
Unfortunately, the "save to clipboard" and "make web page" both don't work with "even spacing" so to save the tabs, you need to have an image editor.  I use Photoshop, but you can use Paint.net(free and very close to Photoshop) or even Paint if you're patient enough.  Just hit PrtScr on your keyboard and paste it in your editor.  If it's really long, let it play in tab karaoke until you can see the next section, pause, prtscr, and repeat.

I hope this was helpful, I made these files more for myself than anything, but I thought I'd share them with everyone here.  If you do use this, let me know how it worked out for you, and post your tabs!

Here are the Mountain C tabs for I Have a Bonnet Trimmed with Blue so you can see how it turned out.  The whole process took less than 10 minutes.

Just wanted to share what I know about this quick way to "tabify" a midi file for quick playing.  Once I can fluidly read sheet music though, which is fast approaching, I don't think I'll be doing this any more.

If anyone has any questions, or needs me to clarify something further, I'd be happy to help!
