2009 Outlook With a core of seasoned veterans and

a crop of talented newcomers, the LSU volleyball team is more than capable of building on its championship tradition during the 2009 season.

Once again playing in one of the nation’s toughest conferences, the Tigers will look to defend its four straight SEC Western Division crowns. LSU also has accumulated four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and posted 22.5 wins per season during its four-year run. “This program is ready to take the next step as far as winning an overall conference championship and moving further into the NCAA Tournament,” head coach Fran Flory said. “I was fortunate enough to be a part of two Final Four teams in 1990 and 1991. Our goal is to return to that level, and we know everything has to fall in place for that to happen. The foundation of the 2009 team is solid. The players are poised, prepared and continue to get better with each challenge they face.” The keys to the team’s ability to take that next step begin with its returning arsenal highlighted by middle blockers Brittnee Cooper and Lauren DeGirolamo along with outside hitters Marina Skender and Michele Williams. Together, LSU’s high octane quartet boasts 52 career accolades, including 2007 and 2008 AVCA All-American Honorable Mention status for both DeGirolamo and Cooper, respectively. The Tigers also return setters Sam Dabbs and Brittney Johnson coupled with veteran outside hitter Angela Bensend and middle blocker Tania Schatow. Between the seven returning players, the 2009 Tigers feature more than 2,500 kills and have contributed to 90 LSU victories. “This experienced group of players has been through the battles and are hungry to get back on the court,” Flory said. “We also have four gifted newcomers who are eager to make an impact at the collegiate level. Getting more versatile players has been the biggest area of growth of our program over the last five seasons and that’s a critical ingredient to where we want to go this season.” Once again, Flory has challenged the Tigers with another highcaliber series of opponents. LSU has 12 matches scheduled against 2008 NCAA Tournament teams as the Tigers open the season against national runner-up Stanford (Aug. 28) followed by matches

4

against Denver (Aug. 29) and host Notre Dame (Aug. 30) at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind. LSU returns home and takes on its second Final Four squad from 2008 as Nebraska (Sept. 4) along with Louisiana-Lafayette (Sept. 5) and Tulane (Sept. 5) visit the Maravich Center for the Tiger Classic. Before entering conference play, the Tigers square off with NCAA Tournament participants Tulane (Sept. 11) and Long Beach State (Sept. 12) in addition to New Orleans (Sept. 12) at the AllState Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans. For the fourth consecutive season, LSU will play a home-andhome series with each Southeastern Conference team in lieu of a league tournament. The Tigers welcome NCAA Tournament participants Tennessee (Sept. 18) and Kentucky (Sept. 20) on the opening weekend of SEC action. Defending SEC champion Florida (Oct. 11) visits the PMAC as part of four-match home stand that features South Carolina (Oct. 9), Arkansas (Oct. 16), Ole Miss (Oct. 18). The four-time defending SEC Western Division champions also play host to Georgia (Oct. 30), Auburn (Nov. 1) Mississippi State (Nov. 20) and Alabama (Nov. 22) before concluding the regular season at NCAA Tournament participant Rice (Nov. 27). “The SEC continues to get better and better,” Flory said. “There are a lot of teams who were young last season that bring back a lot of talented players. The league is as wide open as it’s ever been from top to bottom, and it’s going to be challenge every time we step on the court.” The NCAA Tournament begins with opening rounds, Dec. 3-6, on campus sites before moving onto four regional sites hosted by Florida, Minnesota, Nebraska and Stanford. The Final four is set for Dec. 17-19 at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Fla.

LSU has no shortage of options as Marina Skender, Angela Bensend and Madie Jones can succeed at either the outside or right side hitting positions. The trio is joined by Brittney Johnson, Ally Judkins, Tania Schatow and Michele Williams, who are additional candidates that could see time on the outside when not in their traditional positions. A dangerous server, powerful hitter and consistent passer, Skender’s versatility combined with her experience, makes her one of the most complete players in the SEC. She enters 2009 after racking up 1,097 kills, 954 digs, 247 blocks and 165 aces over her first three seasons before sitting out 2008 with a medical redshirt. Angela Bensend had a strong finish to the 2008 season, connecting on 108 of her 151 kills against SEC opponents. Her steady passing also will be important as she looks to return to her form that brought her 2007 All-SEC Freshmen Team accolades. “The 2009 team is filled with tremendous flexibility and firepower,” Flory said. “It’s very rare to finish the spring not knowing where the pieces are going to fit together in the fall. Marina and Angela give a solid foundation to our steady arsenal.” Madie Jones is physical opposing player who played both outside and right side hitter in high school. She was chosen as one of PrepVolleyball.com’s Class of 2009 Top 50 recruits and tallied a second-place finish at the 2008 USA Volleyball Junior Championships with her club team taking home All-America honors.

Setters

LSU’s setting tandem of Sam Dabbs and Brittney Johnson returns for 2009 after passing out a combined 11.18 assists per game last season. Both players contribute valuable understanding of the game and possess familiarity with the LSU hitters after working extremely hard during the offseason. Dabbs, the 2008 Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, contributed six double-doubles which included LSU’s first triple-double since the 2003 season. She registered 40 or more assists on 10 occasions and ranked inside the SEC’s Top 5 in assists per set. Johnson split time at setter and offered versatility to the Tiger lineup taking swings from the right side. The Baton Rouge native was the only player to post over a kill, an assist and a dig per set last season. She also showcased her athleticism as a consistent blocker. “Sam and Brittney are both very solid setters that can take us to the championship level,” Flory said. “We feel that Sam has acquired a much better feel for our hitters’ strengths after having a season under her belt. Brittney is a very intelligent offensive player who responded very favorably and gained valuable experience as we adjusted the tempo of our offense during the spring.”

Middle Blockers

LSU returns three of its strongest weapons in middle blockers Brittnee Cooper, Lauren DeGirolamo and Michele Williams. Cooper and DeGirolamo earned AVCA All-America Honorable mention status in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Cooper has spent the offseason in each of the last two seasons training with the U.S. National A2 Team. She won medals on both occasions and returns as one of the most-respected players in the SEC. The Houston native popped 302 kills on a .336 hitting percentage and paced the league averaging 1.21 blocks per set in 2008. DeGirolamo’s 2008 season was cut short due to injury, but she will rely on her proven ability to hit and block consistently to bounce back this season. She slapped 430 kills on a .332 hitting percentage to go along with 1.51 blocks per set in 2007. Williams, a unanimous pick to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2008, knocked 162 of her 191 kills in SEC action registering a .302 hitting percentage and will be looked upon to reach even greater heights in her sophomore campaign. “We’ve made being an extremely disciplined blocking team one of areas of emphases during the spring and something that we will continue to fine tune in the fall,” Flory said. “With Brittnee, Lauren and Michele, this portion of the game can be dominating for us. Both players have the capable of taking over matches and controlling the match from the net.”

Defensive Specialist/Liberos

With the departure of the reigning two-time SEC Defensive Player of the Year and AVCA All-American defensive specialist Elena Martinez, LSU will undeniably have a hole to fill in one of the most crucial position on the court. Lauren Waclawczyk along with freshmen Sam Delahoussaye and Meghan Mannari are set to anchor the LSU back row. Waclawczyk saw action in 27 matches accounting for 1.46 digs per set last season, while Delahoussaye and Mannari arrive on the Bayou after extremely decorated prep careers. “The first touch is the most important and there will be opportunities for all three of them to play,” Flory said. “Lauren did an excellent job alongside Elena last year and we’re excited about the progress she made working extremely hard to improve her defensive range. Meagan does a great job of making the play that seems impossible, while Sam has a steady platform and is the best true passer of the trio.”

Southeastern Conference

LSU INTRO This is LSU COACHES TIGERS review History

The Southeastern Conference continues to flourish as a solid and competitive league in women’s collegiate volleyball. In the last two decades, the SEC has made stellar contributions in volleyball. The conference has sent at least two SEC teams to the NCAA Tournament in every season the last 19 years. The SEC had a team reach the Final Four seven of the 10 seasons in the ‘90s with the league having a team advance to the regional final nine of those 10 seasons. Since 2000, the SEC has had a team reach the Final Four three times and regional final four times. In 2008, Florida captured its 18th SEC Championship and made its 19th NCAA Tournament appearance, advancing to the regional semifinals. In all, four teams from the SEC made the NCAA Tournament, including Florida, Kentucky, LSU and Tennessee. Since the inaugural SEC volleyball championship in 1979-80, many changes have occurred in the conference with volleyball. The addition of Arkansas and South Carolina to the league in 1991 brought the divisional format to the sport with five teams competing in the Eastern Division and six teams in the Western Division. In 2009, the SEC entered into an unprecedented TV agreement with ESPN that will provide exclusive coverage of SEC athletics. In the arrangement, SEC volleyball will now be broadcast on three different platforms: ESPNU, FS South/ Southwest/Sun Sports and CSS. Live SEC volleyball coverage can now reach into 46 million homes nationwide on ESPNU, and in the SEC nine-state region, 22 million homes on FS South/Southwest/Sun Sports, and 7 million homes on CSS.

Fran Flory

Volleyball

It hasn’t taken Fran Flory long to turn around the LSU volleyball program. She took over a team that had hit rock bottom in 1997 and has methodically turned it into a team that expects to win every time it steps on the court. From 0-15 in the SEC the season prior to her arrival to three-straight SEC Western Division titles and NCAA Tournament appearances over the last three years, Flory has made her impact felt on the court. With her ability to identify and develop talent, relate to her players and surround herself with top-notch assistant coaches, Flory has made this a great time to be a part of LSU volleyball. “LSU has everything a studentathlete could ask for, from the facilities to the administration. We expect to win championships and every LSU student-athlete has those expectations. Our teams are committed to winning both on the court and in the classroom. “Team togetherness and team ownership are two very important

12

factors in our program. Our teams are committed not only to LSU, but also to each other. Team ownership is vital to the success of any team, company or organization. Everyone must have a clear understanding of the goals and direction of the program. We are very careful to define roles and responsibilities so everyone is headed in the same direction.” Flory came to LSU from the head coaching position at Kentucky, where she led the Wildcats to one NCAA Tournament appearance and was named the AVCA South District Coach of the Year in 1993. Prior to that, she served as an assistant at LSU where she helped the Tigers to three SEC Championships and two Final Four appearances. Now, entering her 11th season, Flory will continue to build on the solid foundation that she has laid out for the LSU volleyball program and continue to design her program around the fundamentals that have made her a success at every stop of her coaching career.

4Education First

A staple of the LSU program since Flory arrived in 1998 has been the tremendous academic success of her players. The Tigers have placed the second-most players on the SEC Academic Honor Roll in the last seven years of any school in the league. In four of those past seven seasons, LSU has led the conference. “Balancing a successful career in the classroom and on the court is a difficult task,” said Flory. “It requires a great deal of discipline and commitment. Our staff truly understands what it takes and shares in the commitment to insure the academic and athletic success of our student-athletes.”

4Building for Success in Life

When athletes sign to play for coach Flory, they sign on not only to maximize their potential as a volleyball player, but also to maximize their potential as a person. “My goal for every student-athlete who competes on my team is to allow and to help them develop into a successful person in all aspects of life. When they graduate, I want them to truly feel prepared for the next step in their lives, whatever that may be. We are not just about developing successful volleyball players, our program is about developing successful people. “Our philosophy is one that we all control our own destiny. Each day we make choices in all aspects of our lives that will influence who and what we become. We strive to provide the freedom and correct environment to make the choices that will prepare our student-athletes for their future.”

“Fran is one of the finest people I have ever met. I have had the pleasure of watching her become one of the finest coaches in our profession. It would be an honor to have my daughter play for her. She has great enthusiasm, is very easy to work with and has a true desire to be successful. She has my utmost admiration and support.”

Head coach at Southern California; Head coach 2000 US Olympic Team

Fans will have the opportunity to donate money in aid of awareness for the world’s most common cause of cancer deaths in women. The Tigers have collected and donated over $5,000 during the event’s first two years. LSU went from wearing specially designed pink warm-up shirts in 2007 and wore commemorative pink jerseys against No. 8 Florida last season. Prior to the match, the Tigers played host to a Pink Carnival that was filled with a multitude of games. LSU won three of its four October matches during the 2008 campaign. The “Dig for the Cure” campaign was originally started in 2003 by Charlotte head coach Lisa Marston, who mother was a breast cancer survivor, and has spread to over 100 volleyball programs across the country. During the previous six years, the campaign raised over half a million dollars.

Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College has, throughout its 145year history, served the people of Louisiana, the region, the nation, and the world. LSU is creating a revolution, one of pervasive change and advancement. For the past five years, the focus of the LSU community has been an increased commitment to excellence. Our progress has been dramatic and shows no sign of stopping. Having witnessed many of yesterday’s possibilities become today’s tangible realities, the LSU community set forth to capitalize on its success. The goal was to improve our standing as a nationally competitive flagship university. Following intense discussions among the LSU Board of Supervisors, campus administrators, faculty, and student leaders, the objectives required to reach this status crystallized, providing the impetus for LSU’s National Flagship Agenda.

Why LSU?

Jill Lytle Wilson Former LSU volleyball player and current assistant coach

LSU INTRO This is LSU COACHES

“I knew the second I stepped foot on campus that I might be the luckiest person on earth to have the chance to play volleyball at LSU. On my official visit, it poured at the football game that day and not a soul left or stopped their cheers until the Tigers claimed the close victory. Instantly that day I saw the great passion for LSU from every professor, coach, student and fan. Now I am fortunate enough to be back coaching at LSU with my mentor, and there is not a day that passes now that I don’t think about how my four years here were the greatest opportunity of my life.

TIGERS review History RECORDS LSU MEDIA

“It was really quite an honor to be able to play for LSU. Being from Lockport, everybody down there is a big LSU fan. Once I graduated from high school and had to make the decision where I was going to play, LSU was the obvious choice because I had grown up an LSU fan and it was a place where my family could watch me play. LSU really helped me grow both as a player and a person. I have nothing but fond memories of the place.”

“Throughout the entire recruiting process I always knew LSU was the best choice. Being from the great state of Louisiana, LSU was a home away from home. I knew that this would be a place I could grow as a student-athlete and a young man. The coaches, faculty, and the 92,000 marvelous fans only help to make the decision much easier. Looking back on it, I couldn’t have asked for more from the experience.”

“As far back as I can remember (riding bicycles, playing little league baseball), I have literally bled purple and gold. It never crossed my mind that there was anywhere else to go other than LSU. The experiences and relationships that I developed at LSU have been an integral part of my life. No other colleges existed in my mind. I am fortunate to have attended a place that I considered a dream and look forward to my association with the University until the day I die.”

LSU GREATS

The following eight individuals are the only athletes to have their jerseys retired by LSU. Basketball has retired the No. 23 for Pete Maravich, No. 50 for Bob Pettit, Jr., No. 33 for Shaquille O’Neal and No. 40 for Rudy Macklin. Football’s only two retired jerseys are the No. 20 worn by Billy Cannon and the No. 37 worn by Tommy Casanova. Baseball retired the No. 15 in honor of longtime coach and athletics director emeritus Skip Bertman and the No. 20 for Ben McDonald. Casanova, Macklin and McDonald joined the prestigious list in May 2009.

50

20

Pettit led LSU to its first NCAA Final Four in 1953 and he later became the first player in NBA history to exceed the 20,000-plus point barrier. Pettit is a member of the NBA Hall of Fame, and in 1997, he was named as one of the top 50 players in NBA history.

One of the true legends of college football in the South, Cannon was the 1959 Heisman Trophy winner and helped the Tigers to the 1958 national title. Cannon’s most memorable performance came in 1959 against Ole Miss when No. 1 LSU trailed No. 3 Ole Miss 3-0 in the fourth quarter. He fielded a punt, broke seven tackles and returned it 89 yards for the 7-3 victory. He went on to a successful 11-year professional career.

“Pistol Pete,” Maravich still holds the NCAA record for career points with 3,667 and for career scoring average with 44.2 points a game. He was selected the National Player of the Year in 1970 after leading the Tigers to the NIT Final Four. He scored 50-plus points an amazing 28 times. He went on to a 10-year professional career and was selected as one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players in 1997.

O’Neal was the first pick in the 1992 NBA Draft. He was named MVP of the league in 2000 and was a three-time NBA Finals MVP after leading the Los Angeles Lakers to three World Championships. At LSU, O’Neal averaged 21.6 points and 13.6 rebounds for his career, and in 1991, he was named the World’s Amateur Athlete of the Year as well as SEC Athlete of the Year and National Player of the Year. In 1997, he was named as one of the top 50 players in NBA history.

About LSU Retired Jerseys

The retirement of the jerseys of Casanova, McDonald and Macklin comes under a new provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws that says the retirement of an athlete’s jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007, so the numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O’Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports. To have a jersey retired at LSU, an athlete must have completed intercollegiate competition for LSU a minimum of five years prior to nomination. Athletes must have demonstrated truly unusual and outstanding accomplishments, exceeding and in addition to all criteria used for Hall of Fame selection. Nominees must have a unanimous vote of support from the Hall of Fame committee.

A legend in the college baseball ranks, Bertman created a dynasty at LSU, guiding the Tigers to five national titles in a 10-year stretch from 1991-2000. He also coached the United States to a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and was an assistant on the gold medal-winning U.S. squad in Seoul, Korea, in 1988. Bertman retired from coaching following the 2001 season and is the LSU athletics director emeritus. Bertman was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Tommy Casanova is the only threetime All-American in the history of LSU football and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. During his Tiger career from 1969-71, Casanova personified versatility for his myriad of talents as he played offense, defense, returned punts and kickoffs. One of just two three-time All-SEC performers at LSU, he played six seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL while earning his medical degree.

Rudy Macklin was a two-time basketball All-American selection during his Tiger career from 1976-81 during which time he became LSU’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,276 boards and the second-leading scorer in school history behind only the legendary Pete Maravich with 2,080 points. He led the Tigers to two Elite Eight appearances and the 1981 Final Four in Philadelphia. He still holds the school single game rebound record with 32, a mark like some of the great records in any sport that may never be broken.

Ben McDonald won the prestigious Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the nation’s most outstanding player, in 1989 and is a member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame. He led LSU to two College World Series appearances. In 1989, McDonald was also named National Player of the Year by Baseball America, The Sporting News and Collegiate Baseball as he went 14-4 with an ERA of 3.49 and an SEC record 202 strikeouts. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles as the No. 1 pick in the major league draft in 1989 and went on to enjoy a 10-year major league career with the Orioles and the Milwaukee Brewers.
