Running SPORE under Snow Leopard on an older MacBook Pro (late model, with the ATI X) results in periodic hangs. Looks like something in the kernel starts spinning. It'll run for up to an hour or so at a time but once the spin starts, only a power-off is possible. I'm guessing it's the video driver; even killing the app doesn't get the screen (or computer) going again.

But then, because Apple removed the cardbus slot on the new MacBook Pro, I had to replace my 2SM2-E ExpressCard/34 card with FirmTek's SpyderHUB eSata to Firewire converter. Anyway, the SpyderHUB and SeriTek enclosure work fine with Snow Leopard.

I have a FirmTek eSata card in my Mac Pro at work, but have not had a chance to test it with Snow Leopard yet. I'll report back once I have.

The text about TechTool Pro was written on August 25, before the DVD of Snow Leopard was released.

There are some comments in the Micromat forums about two minor problems noted so far, one about entering the administrative password and one about the reported volume space use, which TechTool Pro monitors.

I can report that Snow Leopard is fully compatible with the Mini Maglite AA, because that is what I had to use the read the screen on my MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo after the automatic reboot that takes place during the installation. I suggest turning off display sleep in the Energy Saver system preferences pane before beginning the installation. Even with a flashlight, a fully darkened LCD display is almost impossible to read. You must find and click a button to finish the installation, and until you do, no progress is made.

Ratoc FR1SX Firewire-to-SCSI Converter is working with Snow Leopard bit on Mac Pro 8-core

I am using the FR1SX with an old Polaroid SprintScan , SCSI-2 film scanner and latest release of Vuescan.

After SL installation the scanner wasn't found by Vuescan. No kexts are required to make it work, but for installation, the FR1SX needs to be configured using a utility provided by Ratoc.

I reran the Ratoc FR1SX config utility with the scanner powered on: requires two reboots, one to enable the FR1SX config utility and set FR1SX SCSI parameters, and the second to disable the config utilty and enable Firewire-to-SCSI converter function.

For this scanner I use 10MB/s, and SCSI init/reset delays of 1, 2, and 4 seconds (params top to bottom respectively).

After second reboot, Vuescan started and I happily heard the scanner initialize. Slide scanning then proceeded in the ponderous, whirring, stuttering fashion typical of this aged, but very effective film scanner.

A follow-up to my prior query regarding Seritek eSata drivers (MBP with 2SM2-E eSata card). I received this answer quickly from Firmtek support:

"If you are using the bit default mode of Snow Leopard, the existing driver should work. manicapital.com

FirmTek is currently testing a new bit Snow Leopard compatible driver and plans to post it in the download section of manicapital.com once it is validated."

The wording, "should work," doesn't exactly sound definitive, so any reports of success or failure would be much appreciated.

I then saved the QTVR movie file from Tiger (where it runs fine) and moved it to Snow Leopard. When I tried to open it, Snow Leopard put up an alert saying it needed QuickTime Player 7, which is an optional installation from the Snow Leopard disc (unlike Rosetta, which installs easily and automatically when needed). The installer puts QuickTime Player 7 in the Utilities folder, rather than the Applications folder.

QuickTime Player 7 still needs a $ QuickTime Pro key to enable such features as Save, but QuickTime Player 10 does allow Save and Recording and Export without the extra-cost key.

On the other hand, QuickTime Player 10 completely lacks such essential features as looping and speed control, which are part of the A/V Controls in QT Player 7 (for which no Pro key needed).

These confusing changes seem a little bit odd, considering that Apple *invented* QuickTime and QuickTime VR, and it's one of the company's highest-profile technologies.

Okidata C color laser printer: Works if you already had the Oki print driver installed before upgrading to , but so far have not been able to get it to work from a clean install. Emailing Okidata about the issue.

Cantrip muck client: Not updated in years, Snow Leopard finally killed it.

MudWalker and Savitar muck clients: Work, but feel different enough from Cantrip to be less desirable.

Atlantis muck client: Does not work automatically, but can be made to work by following the instructions at [here] . Feels most like Cantrip of the muck clients I tested, in a good way.

iLife 08 will still work with Snow Leopard. Heck, Microsoft Office 04 still works for me. I just bought the upgrade today and so far the only problem is I third party screen savers will no longer work. Hopefully when Apple comes out with the system updates that'll fix that problem, or the third parties will come out with the updated versions. It's not really a big problem for me since I just stick with the screen savers built in. Other that so far everything is running smoothly and you got to release the first versions of an OS will have it problems till the updates come out.

Smooth install of Snow Leopard. Wondering if people are noticing these issues:

Verizon Novatel mini-PCI 3G EVDO card. I can get it to work by going into Network Preferences and connecting, but the signal strength indicator no longer works (for the native drivers). I wrote Verizon and was referred to manicapital.com, which has some drivers listed, including ones for Snow Leopard (32 bit mode), but I am electing not to download this rather than using the native support.

Canon Photostitch no longer runs, it quits on launch. Perhaps this has something to do with changes in Quicktime, which include the end of Quicktime VR

Unsanity's FruitMenu and Windowshade will both refuse to load in Snow Leopard, but no other problems seem to be created. No mention of exists on Unsanity's compatibility page, so I'd guess that Snow Leopard's early release caught them unawares. These are the only 2 haxies I never go without (barring this very situation).

Tried Snow Leopard on an EFI-x Hackintosh running Module I had installed Snow Leopard on an external drive of a Mac Mini, which I then moved to my Hackintosh.

The computer recognized the drive but refused to boot from it - when I rebooted into my installation, all worked well.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I ran some VPN tests. I was able to use both the Cisco VPN Client as others have reported, but only after re-installing the client software. I also was able to use the built-in Systems Preferences/Network/Services/VPN/Cisco IPsec Client. Both connected to a Cisco ASA VPN gateway. I also found that the built-in client has problems with pre-shared keys over 63 characters long. If the key is characters or longer, it immediately fails with "VPN Shared Secret is incorrect" error.

I have an ancient Personal LaserWriter with an almost as old Dyna Mini EtherPrint localtalk to ethernet bridge working under Snow Leopard. As you suggest, it takes an additional computer running an older OS. In my case a Mac Mini running Leopard. I just set up the Mac Mini to use printer sharing. Now I can connect from Snow Leopard to the shared printer and it works fine. No need for any other software or OS X Server.

A day after receiving the information I posted earlier, indicating that the SeriTek drivers work with Snow Leopard in bit mode, I received this from FirmTek:

"Unfortunately, the existing SeriTek/2SM2-E driver does not work with Snow Leopard. It will work with the SeriTek/2SE2-E in the Mac Pro but not the SeriTek/2SM2-E with the MBP."

In my initial question, I did indicate I was using the 2SM2-E card in a MBP.

Privoxy/Tor/Vidalia NOT working with Snow Leopard. The Vidalia log shows it running, but attempting a browser connection gets only an error message from Firefox (The Proxy Server is refusing connections).

Any ideas would be helpful.

Hi, an update on Verizon Novatel 3G mini-PCI compatibility:

I discovered that if you delete the current configuration for Verizon CDMA in Network Preferences, and let the card initialize, then apply the new configuration that the card creates, everything works just fine. I was confused by the card adding a new generic-looking configuration entry under Snow Leopard. The card works natively, no VZAccessManager needed!

I also saw it was not on the supported list and was hesitant about upgrading. I did some testing and thought I could use the driver, but no go. What worked was to download the old drivers from HP and install after the upgrade. Seems to be working fine. Mine is on the network and was added via Bonjour. I hope HP updates its circa drivers for this printer sometime soon!

One thing that I didn't realize would happen with Snow Leopard is that Java would be taken away. I have an application that only works with Java , and under OS X I would use Java Preferences to switch to that version of Java when needed. Now that option is gone, as the only version of Java installed is Java

Is there any way to bring this back? Or am I stuck going back to ?

Installing Apple's Snow Leopard driver () for my Samsung CLP Color laser printer rendered Samsung's Smart Panel app () inoperable. The Smart Panel is a nifty little app that puts a pull down item on the Menu Bar. It also opens automatically when you print something, giving you the status of the printer and a graphic representation of ink levels along with access to a Troubleshooting Guide and Printer Settings. Cool. It coexists with Apple's own Printer Queue app. I immediately missed having it.

Samsung has now posted here its own Snow Leopard compatible printer driver (ver. ) and compatible Smart Panel (ver. ). Kudos to Samsung. Possably it has done so for other printer models, too.

Both the printer driver and Smart Panel app need to be installed for the new Smart Panel to work. However, you can still print with Apple's Snow Leopard driver if you wish. (It provides a more accurate icon on the Apple Printer Queue if you do.) There seems to be no difference in printer performance.

I have seen comments from other Mac users who don't like the Smart Panel app but don't know how to remove it. I was reminded when installing the latest version that the installer also includes an uninstaller. More kudos to Samsung.

Finally, permit me a plug for this nifty little printer. Samsung claims it is the smallest color laser printer in the world! It replaced a Lexmark color laser ink hog and I use it as a personal printer connected by USB to my mid iMac. It's a dandy!

Installed Saturday morning and while I haven't yet tested everything I use, my experience as a user has been essentially bump-free. Had to manually set up my LW 12/ and I know I have to wait for a reunion update.

As a developer who didn't have access to the seeds I've got some work to do. My apps work. Didn't expect and haven't seen any issues with them so far. I would recommend against using an existing version of TrimTheFat, though. I just haven't looked at it closely enough to know that I trust it in

Plugins, as have been noted here, have some issues. The most common one is simply that plugins have to be the same architecture as their host. That means screen savers must be updated to bit and preference panes should be to minimize user hassle. There's another layer, though. In the case of screen savers and pref panes bit builds also must have garbage collection turned on, while previously they couldn't. That's likely to be the biggest source of delay for small developers updating their work because we have to test for the gotchas involved in changed memory management.

A bigger problem, that I didn't see noted in a skim through the compatibility report, is context menu plugins. They're gone. There is no bit update path for them.

The recommended solution is to recreate their functionality as items in the Services menu. That's likely to be an involved process and frankly it simply won't work for some extant plugins. I think the two I support can make the transition but it'll take some time.

The broadest concern is that outside of some static config data, developers don't really have control over when their items are available. Means some of the more complex context analysis I was doing isn't available and users will occasionally see items that aren't actually relevant.

There are several raw converters that do not work with Snow Leopard: DxO Optics Pro and Sony Image Data Converter do not work. Sony's Image Lightbox does however work.

I cannot find a support site for Sony Image Data Converter to report the problem, so if anyone has some info about it I would appreciate it.

Nikon Capture NX 2 will work if you already have it installed before you upgrade to Snow Leopard.

Versions b to have served us well but it is long overdue for a complete makeover. So, I have given ClamXav a much needed facelift and have rewritten the entire application from the ground up. So, what are the changes?

Known bugs:

* Sometimes, ClamXav will crash when you attempt to launch it. It's an intermittent problem and I would have preferred to hold off until I could fix it, but Apple have somewhat twisted my arm by releasing Snow Leopard ahead of their publicised schedule.
* There's a memory leak in ClamXav when scanning large folders

I've not seen this mentioned on your compatibility list, but just to say that VPN Tracker () appears to work fine. All my remote VPN connections appear to be good. The guys at Equinux confirmed it had been working fine on Snow Leopard developer builds and that they didn't foresee any issues with the release version after I asked them about it a couple days prior to release date.

Micromat has answered my inquiry about compatibility of Tech Tool Pro 5 with Snow Leopard thusly:

We are now testing the release version of Snow Leopard with TechTool Pro 5. So far, the only issue we have encountered is that the program serial number must be re-entered every time the TechTool Protection system preference pane is opened. We will release an update to fully support Snow Leopard as soon as possible.

I was unable to successfully use the manicapital.com with Safari in Snow Leopard. Safari defaulted to the built-in (preview-like) pdf viewer.

When I select "get info" from the Finder on Safari then check off "open in bit mode", the adobe pdf plugin now works.

I had a Java 6 incompatibility with the research tool Berkeley Madonna v using Snow Leopard. The java-based flowchart mode simply would not work. I altered the Java 6 applet and applications preferences to bit in "Java Preferences" in the Utilities folder and my incompatibilities disappeared.

I wonder if switching applications to bit mode in general (where the option is available) can fix many small and/or major incompatibilities.

This isn't just related to , but thought I'd pass it along. One thing for anyone experiencing slow-downs in (or or ) is to use Activity Monitor to check the real and virtual memory used by applications, just like checking for CPU usage. I'll explain why for anyone who wants details:

I upgraded to on Friday on my Mac Pro and then noticed on the Mac Book Pro that things were really slow (e.g. a minute or more to switch applications) on as I was about to upgrade it so I held off. About 12 hours later I noticed the same thing on the Mac Pro with With 8 cores that shouldn't happen.

After a bit of digging with Activity Monitor I saw that mobilemesyncclient was using a lot of real memory on both machines. And by a lot of real memory, I mean GB on an 8GB Mac Pro and GB on the 4GB Mac Book Pro. And 4 or 5 times that amount of virtual memory on each machine. After watching memory use still slowly growing, I restarted the machine to see if helped, only to see it start growing again and synchs never stopping.

Eventually, I ended up doing a restore FROM MobileMe to the MacBook Pro which didn't help. So, I did a restore TO MobileMe from the Mac Pro which seemed to help. But it was still synching Preferences item over-night (until Saturday morning), so I turned that off and everything was working fine, synchs being very quick.

I then did a clean install of on the Mac Book Pro since it was all backed up. I did a synch of everything except Preferences (since that was still off) from Mobile Me to the Mac Book Pro. Then I turned Preferences synching back on and reset from the Mac Book Pro to Mobile Me. Everything has been working nicely after the synching propagated through Mobile Me.

I think the problem was that something was corrupt in at least the Preferences portion of Mobile Me synch in the "cloud."

The lesson here for slow machines is to run Activity Monitor and check for lots of CPU usage, but also check for something using a lot of real (and virtual) memory.

By the way, I am % sure this is coincidence and was not related since I'd noticed the Mac Pro running very slowly earlier in the week but a restart seemed to fix it. Temporarily as it turned out.

Snow Leopard disassociated my screens from their custom color profiles (generated last night). I had to pick them again. Not certain if I'll be able to generate new ones with my Spyder2Pro. The application launches, but I didn't have the sensor handy.

Marine Aquarium screensaver is completely broken. The fish tank runs just fine, tests fine, but it will not load as a screensaver. Serene Screen says that this is because of new screensaver requirements for Snow Leopard. There's not an update, nor a promise of one from Serene Screen.

MySQL is not starting up, and the control panel says that the instance cannot be found. Haven't investigated this further so far.

Little Snitch didn't come up with the machine, but neither have I found the folder that "incompatible applications" are supposed to be moved into. An update to the latest beta cured the issue, but apparently lost part or all of my URL database (because I'm being asked permission to do things I'd already approved or denied).

Against all odds, TunnelBlick (for using WiTopia VPN service) appears to work.

The recently released drivers for the Clear WiMax USB antenna/interface were claimed (by Clear/Clearwire) not to work for Snow Leopard, but I haven't experimented with it yet.

Spotless needed an update to (but it prompted me to do so). But the update to is apparently not compatible either.

MS Office v:X (old, but it still worksat least it did yesterday):

MS Word - loads, long SPOD cursor wait, opens a few docs of moderate complexity OK, crashes Finder hard and closes all open apps. Back to the login screen. Firefox was kind enough to save this text and recovered it after the crash (awright! Go Open Source!).

Excel passed a basic open/open doc/close sanity check, but that's all I tried.

Read elsewhere that this version of Powerpoint crashes on open, and the funky MS Word behavior is enough to tell me I need to upgrade.

Tweetdeck appears to work fine.

Silverback loads, records, exports, haven't done much with it so far.

SSH Keychain isn't working reliably, doesn't always appear in the menu bar, isn't asking for or storing my keys.

Fugu appears to be able to connect, haven't tested extensively.

MythFrontend (the front-end for MythTV) appears to work OK (I think I'm on version ).

GarageSale opens without complaint (haven't tested extensively)

PhotoMatix opens and can tone-map an image (haven't tried to save).

Far too much other stuff to test

While I can not answer the question about regaining Apple's Java support, I will note that I think Sun has withdrawn support for x, so they now only support x and x. I do not know why the x support was ALSO withdrawn by Apple.

As to the Java Preferences issue, the list there is supposed to be an fall-back list and the application is supposed to go through it to find a level that it supports and to then use it. In other words: Under you are not supposed to need to use that panel to force use of Java The only application is supposed to see that the first entry is x, ignore it, and then find the listing and use it.

I am having a problem with Aperture and Snow Leopard. I spoke with Apple support and they recommended wiping the drive and installing Leopard [] because my version of Aperture will NOT be supported.

I am annoyed because it is not on any Apple list as being incompatible. Had they publicized the issue I would not have wasted my time and money.

I remember laughing at the Apple Vista ads thinking they were so clever and funny until now that I am the one downgrading my OS because it won't support my software!

1) ZeusDraw appears to work but there is a problem that will cause loss of resolution for images (and will turn pdf objects into low res images) when a file is saved. We will release an update to fix this sometime next week.

Spelling and CoCoAspell:

Snow Leopard's new Text tab in the Language & Text preference pane has a spelling pop-up set by default to `Automatic by Language'. Changing this reveals a number of Apple-supplied dictionaries. This is not only new in itself but must be used to make CoCoAspell work in SL.

CoCoAspell is the Mac OS X frontend to the open source Aspell spelling programe. A large number of dictionaries can be used. Its main advantage is that it can filter HTML and TeX/LaTeX files.

After installing SL my CoCoAspell didn't work. Here is how to get it back. If you haven't picked the languages and filters you want, launch CoCoAspell's Pref Pane (bit) and make your selections.
Now go to System Preferences -> Language & Text;
in the popup under Automatic, the languages you selected in CoCoAspell's pref pane will now show up, with Aspell in parantheses e.g. English (Aspell). You can now choose these and they will now work.

To use kerberized POP at my university, Eudora depends on the Code Fragment Manager library "Kerberos" which is part of the MIT Kerberos Extras for OS X package:

If the MIT Kerberos Extras for OS X have been installed, and thus this library is installed, Eudora will fail to launch with the following error:

Eudora can be launched by removing the library. But then kerberized POP cannot be accomplished.

The latter problem is because Snow Leopard has finally killed off creator code file metadata."

I read that summary and thought it seemed unlikely.

I read the post that Robert linked and I thought it was nonsensical. (It omitted any mention of something like the type code.

I read the Snow Leopard release notes and found no mention of eliminating support for creator codes.

I read the document cited in that post that was offered for "more information" and discovered that it hasn't been updated in two years and in its current state actually indicates that creator codes remain fairly important.

So when I got home just now I tested this idea.

A file with no file type and no extension, but a creator of GKON shows Graphic Converter as the default app.

Change the creator to mgvr and now it's a QuickTime Player document. And just on the face of it it's odd that Apple would create and use a new creator code for QuickTime X in the same OS release that they eliminated their relevance.

A file with a file type of JFIF and no creator or extension shows the Graphic Converter JPEG icon and launches GC.

Change the file type to GIFf and it shows the icon for GIF files from Preview, and launches Preview when double-clicked.

It appears after extended play that the prioritization of application matching criteria has changed since that document, but it's clearly wrong to assert that Snow Leopard has "killed off" the creator code or that extension is the only way other than explicit association to link a file to an app.

A colleague noted that his iWork Numbers application no longer handled negative numbers correctly after he had installed Snow Leopard.

This worked fine on my Mac mini under Leopard; after the installation of , Numbers interpret negative numbers as text.

Apple support could confirm this behavior on some but not all tested Macs.

This behavior is specific to Numbers; Excel handles the negative numbers correctly.

(I should also have mentioned that we are working with Swedish settings, something that might influence text entry.)

I've found that PithHelmet does work with Snow Leopard. The only downside is that it means that Safari has to run in bit mode. Here's what I did to get it to work

o Right-click on manicapital.com
o Click "Get Info"
o Check the box that says "Open in bit mode"
o Run Safari, and you should now get a SIMBL error. This means that PithHelmet is trying to load. Close Safari
o As root, edit the file "/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/manicapital.com" (After backing it up, of course)
o Look for "<key>MaxBundleVersion</key>" down towards the bottom; now look at the next line. It's the <string> line.
o Change the number to
o Save the file
o Start Safari. PithHelmet should now be running!

To be honest, I can't tell any real speed difference between and bit Safari, but ymmv.

Also, on the comments regarding the HP Laserjet setup. Some of these printers didn't come with the JetDirect n (HPJA) internal print server that is required for network IP printing. These can still be found on the internet, and I recently purchased one from "The USB Flashstore."

It's also quite easy to set these printers to use a static IP rather than the default DHCP IP by using telnet in the Terminal window. I found this information on Mac OS X Hints, submitted by amjbrown:

The HP utilities for configuring JetDirect N (as used in LaserJet and others) only run under Windows. The web based configuration utility is not supported on Macs. However, once the DHCP assigned IP address is known (print a test page), you can use telnet to set the IP address and other settings. To access the printer: (only use the full address as seen on your test page printout, and hit enter or return on your keyboard after your entries)

Nova Development officially dropped support of Parallels for Snow Leopard today. They emailed owners of with essentially the same upgrade to "limited time offer" to upgrade for $ they've been sending out since November

The previous support link manicapital.com used to say that they would provide a build that worked on Snow Leopard, but that support article was changed and users now only have one option.

There are discounted versions of Parallels on Amazon and other sites that are similarly priced to the Nova Development upgrade version, but without the hassle of having to track previous license numbers. (The Amazon version even had a $20 rebate coupon, but it may not be extended past the current 8/31/ deadline.)

Like other users that saw no real benefits to upgrading to - in fact there are some downsides if you read the forums - we now have no other solution. I am neither impressed or happy with Nova Development!

I have two Brother Postscript printers, an HLdn and an HLDW. Under Snow Leopard, the dn printed continuous error pages which could only be stopped by pressing the Job Cancel key. The only driver that works properly is the Generic Postscript driver which is an option in the driver pull down menu.

As for the DW, the only driver that seemed work at all was the PCL driver. The problem with that driver is that envelopes did not print properly. If you look at the printer drivers in Snow Leopard you will find that there are no drivers for the But Leopard () does have drivers. I moved the two drivers from to Snow. There is a CUPS driver and one that is not CUPS named "Brother HLDW manicapital.com" The CUPS driver did not work, but the "Brother HLDW manicapital.com" seems to work quite well.

Brother indicates that they are working on updated drivers.

The drivers are located at /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources.

The MacPorts folks recently released a new version () for Snow Leopard, and it contains a port of Privoxy

Both installed smoothly on my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro (on the laptop I first deleted a Privoxy account created by a previous install.)

The disc image created from the installation DVD by CCC will not be burnable (unlike its predecessors & ) without serious time-consuming hand-tuning!

Snow has dozens of files which have only root-level persmissions, and all of these need to be converted to admin level (read-only) in order to pass the flight-check by the burn engine.

Note 1: CCC ver 3.x newest beta running under OSX
and if it makes any difference: the cloning was done to sparse image, a GUID disk image formated with HFS, rather than to the DEFAULT "DVD" partition scheme formated with UFS/ISO

Note2: Perhaps the poster (John) wasn't cloning to a disk image but rather directly to a regular/native HFS partition?

Apple's built-in procedure (inbtge installer itself) has tbs advantage of being self-contained Other more versatile solutions eventually end up having the penalty that the user will want to have customized boot DVDs, replete with extra third-party utilities, but will discover that Apple had removed a vital enabling shell command that allows apps to be launched (even from the terminal; especially since Apple has locked down the Path so that only its own small set of bundled apps [in the] installer fisc may be run). Depending upon facilities like CCC that are not part of the default installer disk only sets up the user for frustration when they want to extend the special case (running the installer from a non-boot volume) into the general case (running the installer off a mod'd DVD disk).

A number of people (including yours truly) have being told during the OS X "Snow Leopard" install that your existing disk cannot be used to start up the computer.

Some threads point to PGPDesktop. I don't run PGPDesktop, any system extensions, or pretty much anything else. My system disk was a RAID 1 at one point, but after issues with point updates breaking the mirror, I broke the mirrors and cloned it all off to a new disk. This thread details a fix involving a fake "resizing" of the disk partition:

Yes, I have an HP Color LaserJet N on my home network. It is connected via ethernet to the Airport Extreme hub. So I just went to printer setup (after upgrading to Snow Leopard) and waited for it to show up under "More Printers" at the bottom of the printer window. It shows up via bonjour, and had an IP address and different name. I did have to load the HP driver () for it before it would work well.
One reason it probably doesn't show up on the Apple list of supported printers, is that it no longer shows up on the HP list of supported printers either.
