FileMaker Pro began as an MS-DOS-based computer program named Nutshell – developed by Nashoba Systems of Concord, Massachusetts, in the early s. Nutshell was distributed by Leading Edge, an electronics marketer that had recently started selling IBM PC-compatible computers.

With the introduction of the Macintosh, Nashoba combined the basic data engine with a new forms-based graphical user interface (GUI). Leading Edge was not interested in newer versions, preferring to remain a DOS-only vendor, and kept the Nutshell name. Nashoba found another distributor, Forethought Inc., and introduced the program on the Macintosh platform as FileMaker. When Apple introduced the Macintosh Plus in the next version of FileMaker was named FileMaker Plus to reflect the new model's name.

Forethought was purchased by Microsoft, which was then introducing their PowerPoint product that became part of Microsoft Office. Microsoft had introduced its own database application, Microsoft File, shortly before FileMaker, but was outsold by FileMaker and therefore Microsoft File was discontinued. Microsoft negotiated with Nashoba for the right to publish FileMaker, but Nashoba decided to self-publish the next version, FileMaker 4

What is the difference between an “Upgrade” a “Trade Up” and a "Conversion", and how does it affect my license rights?

Customers “upgrade” when they replace an eligible older version of the software (e.g., FileMakerPro 11) with the current version (e.g.,

FileMakerPro 12). An upgrade also occurs when a customer transitions from FileMaker Server 12 toFileMaker Server 12 Advanced. In

these upgrade situations the FileMaker software license terms state, “the upgrade or update does not constitute the granting of a second

license to the Software (i.e., you may not use the upgrade or update in addition to the software it is replacing, nor may you transfer the

software which is being replaced to a third party).” Following an upgrade, the customer only has one license because they received a

special discount price when they paid for the upgrade.

Customers “trade up” when they transition from the current version of FileMakerPro 12 toFileMakerPro 12 Advanced. In this trade up

situation, the customer has two licenses. So in this trade up situation, the customer may continue to use both FileMakerPro 12 and

FileMakerPro 12 Advanced software on the same or different computers. This applies to volume licensing only.

Customers order a "Conversion" sku when they transition from FileMaker Server 12 toFileMaker Server 12 Advanced. This "Conversion"

sku includes a year of Maintenance. Applies to volume licensing only

FileMaker Retail Product Information

FileMaker Maintenance is not available for retail product.

Retail product cannot be used to upgrade volume licensing.

FileMaker Licensing Information

Electronic License Delivery - ELD/ESD

All FileMaker licensing is delivered via electronic download. (separate media purchases are not required) The customer will receive an

email with the following:

A link to a web page which contains their FileMaker contract number, license key codes and software download instructions. Customers

are encouraged to print a copy of this page for their records.

Customers can also purchase FileMaker v12 physical media for $20 SLP each or EDS downgrade media for $5 SLP each; the skus are

listed on the MEDIA_TECH SUPPORT tab. The number of media sets ordered cannot exceed the number of seats for which you are

licensed. These additional media sets do not count towards determining tier levels.

Languages to choose from in the downloads:

FileMakerPro/Advanced: English, German, French, Italian, Swedish, Japanese, Dutch, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese

and Brazilian-Portugese.

FileMaker Server/Server Advanced: English, German, French, Italian, Swedish, and Japanese.

Volume License Agreement (VLA), Education/Non-Profit Volume License Agreement (ENPVLA)

The minimum initial order for a VLA/ENPVLA is 5 seats of software licenses. Customers can mix & match any FileMaker software

products, as well as new and upgrade seats to reach the minimum volume requirement for each tier. Maintenance does not apply

towards the 5 seat minimum.

One year of Maintenance is automatically included with New license purchases of FileMakerPro, FileMakerPro Advanced, FileMaker

Server and FileMaker Server Advanced.

Maintenace is not included with Upgrade license purchases but can be purchased separately. If Maintenance is purchased at the same

time as the Upgrade the customer can order Renewal Maintenance skus; if they choose to add on Maintenance at a later date they would

purchase Expired Maintenance skus.

Only FileMakerPro, FileMakerProUpgrade and FileMakerPro Maintenance are available on a per-seat, multi-tier pricing discount

structure.

To add-on new or upgrade FileMaker products to an existing license agreement, customers must have a FileMaker10 or newer VLA .

There is no minimum purchase quantity required for add-on products and they count towards the FileMakerPro minimum volume

requirements for each tier. The current VLA number must accompany the order if the total number of units is less than 5.

Maintenance for VLA and ENPVLA

FileMaker Maintenance assures that customers will automatically get the latest FileMaker upgrades released throughout the period of

their FileMaker Maintenance agreement. (FileMaker Maintenance does not include Technical Support)

VLA/ENPVLA Maintenance customers must renew their Maintenance prior to its expiration to take advantage of the "Renewal"

Maintenance price. Once renewed, the new Maintenance expiration date will be one or two years from the original Maintenance renewal

expiration date (depending on the renewal SKU ordered).

Once the Maintenance expires, an "Expired" Maintenance price is available for VLA/ENPVLA customers who want to reinstate their

expired Maintenance contract. The new Maintenance expiration date will be set to one or two years from the date of the Expired

Maintenance order (depending on the Maintenance SKU's ordered).

If a customer's Maintenance expires and FileMaker announces the availability of an upgrade, the customer is no longer eligible for the

Expired Maintenance price. The customer must purchase the product upgrade or (if they don't qualify for the upgrade version) new

licenses.

When additional years of Maintenance are added to extend the expiration date of a line item on the same order, the seats extending the

Maintenance expiration date do not count toward tier levels, minimum initial order quantity, or product discount levels.

When Maintenance is renewed for existing seats and new seats are ordered at the same time, these renewal seats AND new the seats do

count toward tier levels, minimum initial order quantity, or product discount levels.

Customers ordering Maintenance Renewal for existing licenses and New licenses (which include Maintenance) at the same time, must

submit two separate orders if the Maintenance renewal date for the existing licenses is not in the same billing period as the New licenses.

Customers who wish to renew Maintenance on multiple seats with multiple end dates must submit separate orders if the renewal dates

are not in the same billing period.

VLA for Non-Profit - (c) (3)

Non-profit organizations in the U.S. with current proof of (c)(3) non-profit status are eligible to order FileMaker software under

FileMaker's Education/Non-Profit discount pricing.

Annual Volume License agreement (AVLA), Education/Non-Profit Annual Volume License Agreement (ENPAVLA)

This is a contractual program where the customer signs an annual usage agreement. The annual fee is 1/3 rd the cost of a standard

VLA/ENPVLA. The AVLA/ENPAVLA also includes free software upgrades during the contract period.

The minimum initial purchase requirement is 5 units; customers can mix & match products to reach the minimum. Customers can add

additional seats at anytime during the period of the agreement with no minimums.

This is a pay-as-you-go program, so at the end of the year the AVLA/ENPAVLA customer can choose to renew the annual agreement for

another year, purchase the software or de-install the software. Customers must complete the online agreement at:

AVLA/ENPAVLA customers would purchase NEW AVLA skus for their initial purchase of each license and RENEWAL AVLA skus for the

annual renewal of each license.

standalone entity. An eligible site is defined as a whole company, subsidiary, or standalone entity that has 25 or more employees or

CPUs, with a unique taxpayer ID number or equivalent.

The ENPSLA is a 100% attached Site-wide technology license for all CPU's or Faculty/Staff (which ever is less) in an educational

institution or non-profit organization. An eligible site is defined as an accredited public or private university, college, and community college

that grants degrees requiring at least two full years of full-time matriculation OR accredited public and private K institutions and Nonprofit

organizations with (c)(3) non-profit status.

For Higher Education institutions, the ENPSLA program provides a 100% student usage license so that all enrolled students are licensed

to use FileMakerPro.

The SLA/ENPSLA contains the current shipping versions of FileMakerPro, FileMakerPro Advanced, FileMaker Server and FileMaker

Server Advanced and includes one year of Maintenance for all products.

Mid-year reporting is not necessary under the SLA/ENPSLA as long as the total number of seats at a site does not grow more than 10%

during the 1 year Maintenance term. Customers will need to pay, or true-up, on their expanded seats on the renewal date of the

agreement. If a customer grows more than 10% during their agreement term, they are required to contact FileMakerto discuss what

additional seats need to be purchased, based on their company's growth.

Converting the trial version to the full version of FileMaker Pro

You can convert your copy of the trial version of FileMaker Pro 13 to the full version without uninstalling the trial version. All of your settings, recent files list, and Favorites are preserved, so you can continue working with your FileMaker Pro data uninterrupted.

You can also use the steps below to upgrade your retail copy of FileMaker Pro version 9, 10, 11, or 12 to the full version of FileMaker Pro  During the installation process, you’ll be asked to provide the license key for your current product.

To install FileMaker Pro 13 from the trial version:

If the trial version is already running, choose Help menu > Buy FileMaker Pro.

The FileMaker Store web page appears.

If you’re upgrading from FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Pro Advanced version 9, 10, 11, or 12, you can only select a FileMaker Pro 12 or FileMaker Pro 13 product on the Retail page. If you’re not upgrading, you can select from the Retail or Licensing page.

Your license key for that product will be sent to you by email. Print that email and keep it in a safe place.
