Bigasoft's Total Video Converter is very similar to many of the other video converters that've been on GOTD -- it uses ffmpeg & QT code, it has a decent selection of output profiles, it lets you trim, crop, add FX, watermarks, text subs, & it'll import a good selection of video formats, including DVD VIDEO_TS folders, though imported DVDs will show as separate VOB files that can be merged in-program. Converting p AVC mkv video to DVD the video looked very good, but transcode times were on the slow side, using just one core with an AMD quad & 0 GPU -- while the Bigasoft Total Video Converter doesn't support ATI hardware acceleration, *usually* there's some sort of DirectX involvement or boost. Converting DVD video to full-sized h/AVC video for a Droid or Apple cell again the results looked good, though you might have to play with the aspect ratio settings, & while CPU use was near max, transcoding was still a bit on the slow side, taking ~ minutes for a 5 minute clip [a good time here would be ~ minutes or less on this hardware]. While you can adjust more than the usual number of profile settings, H/AVC output was constant bit rate rather than VBR, & DVD mpg2 set to a bit rate of was reported as only by MediaInfo. Most all of the DVDs you buy use 24 fps video with something called pull-down -- basically flags are added inside the video file that tell the player to repeat frames to achieve NTSC spec fps this saves space compared to encoding the repeated frames, letting you use less compression for higher quality. While Bigasoft's Total Video Converter will not add pull-down, it will let you create DVD video files at fps that you can then run through a separate app [e.g. dgpulldown] to add those special flags -- most converters limit you to 25 or fps [PAL/NTSC] DVD mpg2. Alternatively many (most? -- all?) DVD players will play 24 fps video just fine, repeating needed frames on their own.

Installation adds the "Bigasoft" program folder with 60 files, 4 folders, ~ MB -- after using the manicapital.com AppCompactor that was reduced to MB, though compressed that way it needs thorough testing [All tests BTW were done with the un-compressed original]. The registry gets 2 keys, 1 for the app & one for uninstall. I couldn't test Nvidia GPU acceleration so I've no idea how well it works, or doesn't.

Whether Bigasoft Total Video Converter is the best converter for you depends on the video you've got, the video you need, & how much transcoding speed matters, but installation is low impact enough that I don't think anyone should be afraid to give it a try. As far as purchasing one of these converters goes, right now I think companies like Bigasoft have a tough sell on their hands -- December through March is traditionally when retail alternatives from companies like Sony, Roxio, Nero, & Corel are very heavily discounted, & those 4 for example all give you Much more video editing capability for close to the same price or less -- I've recently seen Sony & Nero for $0 after MIR.
