Recent versions of FileMaker Pro support local activation.  This means that activation takes place on your PC or Mac and does not require an Internet connection or activating by phone in order to use the application.  The following table outlines the versions of FileMaker Pro that support local activation:

Depending on the version of FileMaker Pro you are using will determine what actions you need to perform when installing FileMaker Pro on a new or other machine.

Versions of FileMaker Pro that support Local Activation (FileMaker Pro 10 and above)

If you are transferring a version of FileMaker Pro that supports local activation, perform these steps to move your copy of FileMaker Pro from your "old" computer to your "new" computer.

1. Backup any of your FileMaker Pro files you want to move to your "new" computer.
2. Uninstall FileMaker Pro on your "old" computer.  Uninstalling FileMaker Pro will not delete your FileMaker Pro databases and solutions
3. Install FileMaker Pro on your "new" computer using the same or compatible license key
4. Copy your FileMaker Pro files (from Step #1) to your "new" computer.

Versions of FileMaker Pro that support Online / Phone activation (FileMaker Pro 9)

If you are transferring a version of FileMaker Pro that supports online or phone activation, perform these steps to move your copy of FileMaker Pro from your "old" computer to your "new" computer. You may have to exchange your FileMaker Pro 9 or FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced License Key before installing on your  new computer.

1. Backup any of your FileMaker Pro files you want to move to your "new" computer.
2. Before you Uninstall your software make sure you have your license key.
3. Uninstall FileMaker Pro on your "old" computer.  Uninstalling FileMaker Pro will not delete your FileMaker Pro databases and solutions.
4. Contact Customer Support to determine if you need to exchange your license key.
   1. If Customer Support has provided an exchanged license key for your FileMaker Pro 9 or FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced then follow the directions in your exchange email to reinstall your software.
   2. If your license key for FileMaker Pro 9 or FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced did not have to be exchanged then proceed to step 5 below.
5. Install FileMaker Pro on your "new" computer using the same or compatible license key. 

NOTE: If your most recent activation was completed via the telephone, the subsequent deactivation (or transfer) must also be completed via the telephone. You will have to contact Customer Support.

Converting the trial version to the full version of FileMaker Pro

You can convert your copy of the trial version of FileMaker Pro 13 to the full version without uninstalling the trial version. All of your settings, recent files list, and Favorites are preserved, so you can continue working with your FileMaker Pro data uninterrupted.

You can also use the steps below to upgrade your retail copy of FileMaker Pro version 9, 10, 11, or 12 to the full version of FileMaker Pro 13. During the installation process, you’ll be asked to provide the license key for your current product.

To install FileMaker Pro 13 from the trial version:

If the trial version is already running, choose Help menu > Buy FileMaker Pro.

The FileMaker Store web page appears.

If you’re upgrading from FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Pro Advanced version 9, 10, 11, or 12, you can only select a FileMaker Pro 12 or FileMaker Pro 13 product on the Retail page. If you’re not upgrading, you can select from the Retail or Licensing page.

Your license key for that product will be sent to you by email. Print that email and keep it in a safe place.
